The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds hunters that the 2025 gun deer season will run from Saturday, November 22, through Sunday, November 30.
Last year, the season opens later in the month, which may mean fewer deer on the move compared to earlier openers. However, cooler temperatures and potential snow cover could improve hunting conditions.
As of October 31, 2025, hunters have purchased a total of 463,983-gun, bow, crossbow, sports, and patron licenses, including 137,394 for gun privileges alone.
Updated Deer Management Units for 2025
Several Deer Management Units (DMUs) have been updated for the 2025 season. In particular, DMUs within the Northern Forest Management Zones have been transitioned from county-based to habitat-based units. Hunters are urged to review the new DMU map before heading out and confirm the correct unit name or number when applying for antlerless permits.
Harvest Registration Requirements
Hunters must register every harvested deer electronically by 5 p.m. the day after recovery. Registration requires the unique harvest authorization number tied to each permit. Proper reporting helps DNR biologists and County Deer Advisory Councils manage Wisconsin’s deer populations effectively.
Deer can be registered through:
Target Identification and Safety
Hunters are reminded to positively identify their target before shooting, as elk may wander outside their management zones during the fall breeding season. Harvesting an elk without a tag can result in fines and license revocation.
To ensure safety, hunters should follow the four TAB-K firearm safety rules:
- Treat every firearm as if loaded.
- Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
- Be certain of your target and what lies beyond.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
Hunters must also wear at least 50% blaze orange or fluorescent pink on clothing above the waist.
Finally, hunters are encouraged to donate processed deer through the DNR Deer Donation Program, which helps supply food pantries and support Wisconsinites in need.
