University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) students recently made a strong showing at the national Students of Agronomy, Soils, and Environmental Sciences (SASES) meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The team secured first place in the Quiz Bowl and top positions in the poster competition, outperforming competitors from across the nation.
The UWRF Quiz Bowl team, comprising Heather Hatfull, Hannah Schull, Megan Culpitt, and August Roach, demonstrated exceptional knowledge in various agriculture and environmental topics. Their success highlights the rigorous academic preparation provided by the Plant and Earth Science Department at UWRF.
Elayna Stirn, a senior horticulture major, claimed first place in the poster competition's crop disease, pest, and weed control category. Her research focused on the impact of pea rust on pea photosynthesis. Austin Meade, a junior crop and soil science major, secured third place in the same category.
“This outcome is a testament to the preparation that our students are getting in the Plant and Earth Science Department,” said Yoana Newman, professor of crop science who, along with Brandt Berghuis, assistant professor of crop science, advised UWRF students participating in SASES.
In addition to academic competitions, UWRF students participated in learning sessions and networking events with industry professionals. They also explored the local area, visiting a pecan farm, the San Antonio Botanical Garden, and the River Walk.
UWRF's success at the SASES competition reflects the university's commitment to providing students with a high-quality agricultural education.
By fostering a strong academic environment and encouraging student involvement in research and competitions, UWRF is preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders.
