The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that nominations are now open for the 21st annual Invasive Species Action Awards, with submissions accepted until February 16, 2025.
The awards, organized by the Wisconsin Invasive Species Council, recognize individuals, groups, and organizations for significant efforts to combat invasive species.
These invasive species, which include nonnative plants and animals, pose threats to Wisconsin's ecosystems, economy, and sometimes human health.
Categories for recognition include volunteer and professional efforts focused on preventing, managing, or eradicating terrestrial and aquatic invasive species.
Nominees must demonstrate exceptional contributions to protecting Wisconsin’s native wildlife, wetlands, forests, prairies, and water bodies.
Winners are chosen by a panel of judges appointed by the council. Notifications for nominees and winners will be sent in April, with an award ceremony to follow in June during Invasive Species Action Month.
Interested participants can find the nomination form on the Wisconsin Invasive Species Council’s website. Submissions must be completed and submitted by midnight on February 16, 2025.
The DNR urges Wisconsin residents to play an active role in protecting native species by avoiding the movement of invasive species or materials that might carry them to new areas. These efforts are crucial since invasive species, once established, are difficult to control and can disrupt natural ecosystems.
