USDA launches innovation challenge for Next-Gen Ag solutions

USDA launches innovation challenge for Next-Gen Ag solutions

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) announced a new "Nourishing Next Generation Agrifood Breakthroughs" challenge.

This program seeks innovative research proposals from early-career scientists focused on food security, climate-smart agriculture, and promoting equity in the agricultural sector.

A total of $2 million will be awarded to winning teams whose research projects demonstrate the potential to address these interconnected challenges.

The Innovation Challenge prioritizes groundbreaking and potentially high-risk, high-reward approaches that align with USDA and FFAR's research priorities.

"We are investing in the next generation of agricultural science leaders with disruptive ideas," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "This initiative is crucial for supporting early-career researchers who hold the key to future breakthroughs."

Researchers from universities, non-profit organizations, for-profit entities, and government research agencies are all encouraged to apply. The application deadline for the Innovation Challenge is July 29, 2024.

This challenge reflects the Administration's commitment to transforming the U.S. food system. The Administration's goals include strengthening local food production, ensuring access to healthy food for all communities, and fostering a more equitable and environmentally sustainable agricultural sector.
