Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation (WFBF) President Kevin Krentz has expressed support for LRB-4676, a bill that would allow WFBF to offer its members a unique and affordable health insurance plan currently available in seven other states.
Krentz emphasized WFBF's long history of serving its members through various benefits, including healthcare solutions. He highlighted the growing challenges faced by farm families due to rising healthcare costs, which hinder individuals from starting or maintaining agricultural businesses.
WFBF is seeking a one-time exemption from state insurance regulations to implement a successful model already operating in other states. This plan would specifically target individuals who lack employer-sponsored coverage and may not qualify for federal incentives under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
According to Krentz, approximately 50,000 uninsured Wisconsinites could benefit from this initiative, potentially reducing the state's uninsured population. The proposed plan would offer attractive premiums from a trusted source to farmers and other Wisconsinites without employer-based insurance.
WFBF members in other states have experienced significant savings, with premiums between 30 and 60 percent lower than comparable unsubsidized plans. Krentz expressed hope that Wisconsin Farm Bureau members would also gain access to these benefits.
"Farmers need a better option, one that's tailored to our unique needs. We need Farm Bureau Health Plans," Krentz concluded.
