Wisconsin announces 2024 spongy moth aerial treatment plans

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has released its 2024 spongy moth aerial treatment plans to address the record-breaking populations observed in eastern and central Wisconsin in 2023. This initiative aims to prevent the invasive insect from spreading westward and harming the state's valuable timber, nursery, and tourism industries.

Detailed information, including treatment area maps, spray specifics, fact sheets, and more resources, is available on the DATCP website at smaerialspray.wi.gov.

DATCP plans to treat select areas in western Wisconsin using low-flying planes from May to July. Roughly 28,590 acres across 23 sites within nine counties will be targeted. These areas have shown concerning increases in spongy moth populations. This non-native insect poses a threat to hundreds of tree and shrub species with its voracious appetite.

Barron, Buffalo, Chippewa, Crawford, Dunn, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, and Rusk counties are included in the aerial treatment plan. An interactive map lets residents see the specific areas scheduled for treatment.

Residents seeking more information can attend upcoming public presentations hosted by the spongy moth program staff. These presentations will offer opportunities to learn about the treatment plans, ask questions, and gain insights into the spongy moth and its impact.

The presentations will be held on:

  • Thursday, March 14, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, at the Platteville Public Library (225 W. Main St., Platteville)
  • Monday, March 18, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, at the Chippewa Falls Public Library (105 W. Central St., Chippewa Falls)
