The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has made the decision to end the river otter trapping season in the Northern Zone, effective April 1, 2024, at midnight. This decision comes as trappers are expected to meet the statewide harvest quota of 2,500 river otters within the next week.
This year's milder winter conditions and consistent water levels have provided ample opportunities for licensed trappers across Wisconsin. Through mandatory registration of river otter harvests and electronic reporting systems, the DNR has closely monitored trapping activities throughout the season.
The regulations and framework of the current season aim to balance trapping opportunities with the conservation of river otter populations in Wisconsin. As per the rules, the DNR Secretary has the authority to close the otter trapping season prematurely if harvest levels surpass predetermined goals.
Originally slated to run from November 4, 2023, to April 30, 2024, or until the harvest quota was met, the closure of the Northern Zone shifts its end date, prohibiting any further river otter harvesting on or after April 1. Meanwhile, the river otter season in the Southern Zone will adhere to its scheduled closure on March 31.
