Wisconsin Farmers Union Advocates for Strong Farm Bill

Wisconsin Farmers Union Advocates for Strong Farm Bill

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) will hold a press conference in La Crosse on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 1:30 PM as part of the National Farmers Union’s Week of Action.

The event aims to highlight the increasing instability facing family farmers and advocate for action at both federal and state levels.

Farmers are currently navigating volatile markets, escalating input costs, federal funding reductions, staff layoffs, and renewed trade concerns, all without the security of a long-term Farm Bill. Simultaneously, Wisconsin's state budget decisions will significantly impact rural communities and local food systems.

Speakers will address critical federal and state agricultural priorities, emphasizing the necessity of a strong, bipartisan Farm Bill and sustained state funding for initiatives like the Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) program.

Confirmed speakers include State Senator Brad Pfaff, State Representative Tara Johnson, and Wisconsin Farmers Union President Darin Von Ruden.

The press conference will take place at Burns Park, located at 701 Main Street in La Crosse, WI 54601. Following the press conference at 2:00 PM, attendees will proceed to Representative Derrick Van Orden’s office for a member meeting (media will not attend this portion).

The Farm Bill is essential for the future of US agriculture, and delays create significant risks for farmers. Wisconsin’s state budget presents a vital opportunity to invest in rural resilience, local food infrastructure, and climate-smart agriculture. This press conference is part of a coordinated national and statewide effort to underscore the stakes for farmers.
