Wisconsin seeks input on 2024 deer season

Wisconsin seeks input on 2024 deer season

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting the public to contribute to the development of the 2024 deer season framework. This collaborative effort aims to ensure a sustainable deer population and a balanced hunting experience across the state.

Residents can provide valuable insights through an online questionnaire available from April 6th to 14th, 2024. This feedback will be combined with county-specific deer population data and public comments gathered at local County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC) meetings.

CDACs play a vital role in deer herd management. Each county council convenes annually to review data on fawn-to-doe ratios, harvest trends, herd health, and the impact of deer on agriculture, forestry, and vehicle collisions. Additionally, they consider the perspectives shared by hunters within their jurisdiction. This comprehensive approach allows CDACs to make informed recommendations to the DNR regarding hunting regulations that best address current deer population dynamics and local needs.

The public can actively participate in shaping deer management in two ways. The online questionnaire offers a convenient platform to share feedback during the designated comment period. Alternatively, residents can attend a CDAC meeting scheduled between April 22nd and May 2nd, 2024. Specific meeting details can be found on the DNR's Meetings & Hearings calendar.

By actively engaging in this process, Wisconsin residents can contribute to a sustainable deer population and a successful 2024 deer season.
