The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation has received a generous $50,000 donation from Mike and Shirley Duerst, Farm Bureau members from Verona in Dane County.
This contribution will create a fund to assist future participants of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation (WFBF) Leadership Institute by helping to cover participant fees and program-related costs.
The Leadership Institute is a year-long training initiative aimed at developing strong advocates for agriculture and cultivating local Farm Bureau leadership. Through the program, participants gain valuable skills in areas such as communication, advocacy, collaboration, and strategic leadership.
Graduates are encouraged to actively contribute to their local Farm Bureaus and pursue leadership positions within the agricultural industry and their communities. Many alumni go on to hold prominent roles, including business owners, presidents, and CEOs.
“When we invest in developing Farm Bureau members through the Leadership Institute, we’re not just building individual skillsets, we’re also strengthening our county Farm Bureaus and laying the foundation for community leaders across Wisconsin,” said Senior Director of Member Relations and Leadership Institute coordinator Wendy Volkert.
“We are very thankful for the Duersts’ contribution to this vision which ensures members have the opportunity to grow as leaders and bring their voices to the table. Our graduates are equipped with the skills needed to make a difference in agriculture and beyond.”
Although some participants have their fees sponsored by local Farm Bureaus or employers, those without sponsorship can apply to this new fund, starting with the 2027 Leadership Institute class. Applications will open in summer 2026.
