Ahold Delhaize USA, a prominent grocery retail group, has teamed up with The Campbell’s Company to initiate a new pilot program aimed at reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable potato farming.
This three-year pilot focuses on implementing regenerative farming techniques that bolster soil health and lower carbon emissions.
The initiative, funded by both Ahold Delhaize USA and Campbell’s, will support three potato farms located in North Carolina, New York, and Michigan.
These farms, spanning 1,000 acres, are crucial as they supply the potatoes needed for Campbell’s products sold in Ahold Delhaize USA’s brand stores.
The harvested potatoes will contribute to producing popular items like Kettle Brand® chips, Cape Cod® chips, and Campbell’s® soups.
Regenerative practices such as cover cropping, compost application, nutrient management, and the conversion of farm equipment to renewable energy sources will be central to the pilot. These methods are vital for enhancing soil quality and reducing the environmental impact of farming activities.
Ahold Delhaize and Campbell’s will collaborate with farmers to measure and analyze the impact of these practices on soil health and emissions. This effort builds on Campbell’s ongoing sustainable agriculture program, which has been engaging all its potato suppliers since 2023.
This initiative marks the third farmland-focused pilot launched by Ahold Delhaize USA this year, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and its Scope 3 emission reduction goals.
Campbell’s also continues its investment in sustainable agriculture, expanding its focus beyond potatoes to include other crops like tomatoes and wheat in the United States.
Through such collaborative efforts, Ahold Delhaize USA and Campbell’s are setting a standard for the integration of regenerative practices in the agriculture sector, aiming to create more resilient food systems and contribute to environmental sustainability.
