The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is seeking public input until April 29, 2025, on a proposed special pesticide registration for Lorox DF herbicide to control weeds in carrots. Manufactured by Tessenderlo Kerley, Inc., Lorox DF contains the active ingredient linuron.
While Lorox DF is registered for carrots and other crops in Wisconsin, this special registration is needed for its use in sandy soils.
It would allow carrot growers to combat broadleaf weeds, notably common ragweed and Eastern black nightshade, which have become problematic, especially in the Central Sands region where pesticide choices are limited. Black nightshade also poses a harvest hazard due to its poisonous berries.
The proposed registration includes restrictions on Lorox DF application in areas with groundwater less than 30 feet deep, based on soil organic matter content.
This is the second such special registration for Lorox DF, with a proposed expiration of December 31, 2029. No adverse effects were reported during the previous registration.
A preliminary environmental assessment suggests a full environmental review is not required. Interested parties can submit comments by 4:30 p.m. on April 29, 2025, via mail to Alyssa Foss at DATCP, PO Box 8911, Madison, WI, 53708-8911, or by email to alyssa.foss@wisconsin.gov.
This special registration process allows states to address local pest issues with pesticide uses not on the federal label when existing options are insufficient.
