With temperatures mostly seasonal during the past week, some farm fields got hit with flash flooding and high winds while others had no measurable precipitation. According to the latest crop/weather report from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, topsoil moisture conditions ended the week at seven percent very short, 23 percent short, 66 percent adequate and four percent surplus.
As of Sunday, about five percent of the corn was silking. That's slightly behind normal during this time in July. However, the corn crop is rated 77 percent good to excellent, which is two percentage points better than last week.
Over half of the soybeans are blooming--a full week ahead of the five-year average. Eleven percent of the beans are setting pods. The crop is rated 73 percent good to excellent.
Fifty-two percent of the oats are coloring statewide and two percent of the crop has already been harvested. Farmers have also combined nine percent of the winter wheat for grain, which is eight days ahead of last year and seven days better than normal.
In the hay fields, 71 percent of the second crop is off the ground and some farmers have already started to cut third crop.
