DATCP advises safe manure spreading practices

DATCP advises safe manure spreading practices

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) emphasizes informed manure application practices for farmers. Their runoff risk advisory forecast provides crucial data on short-term field runoff potential, considering weather and soil temperature on a granular level. This resource, updated frequently by the National Weather Service, empowers farmers to make strategic decisions regarding manure spreading.

DATCP highlights the importance of nutrient management plans in determining application rates and locations. These plans, coupled with the runoff forecast, offer a comprehensive approach to manure management. Farmers can seek guidance from crop consultants or county conservationists in developing such plans or identifying lower-risk fields for spreading.

Furthermore, DATCP underscores safety protocols for manure haulers. Prioritizing safe driving practices on roadways minimizes the risk of spills, protecting public health and the environment. While accidental spills aren't illegal, failure to report and properly address them is a violation. All agricultural operations must report spills impacting water bodies to the DNR's 24/7 emergency hotline at (800) 943-0003.
