Explore Fall Agritourism at Local Wisconsin Farms

By Blake Jackson

Autumn in Wisconsin brings with it a special kind of charm especially through fall agricultural tourism, or “agritourism.” Across the state, families and visitors head to local farms for wagon rides, apple picking, corn mazes, and warm apple cider donuts.

These seasonal traditions are deeply rooted in Wisconsin’s agricultural heritage, celebrating the harvest and the hard work of farmers throughout the year.

As National Farmers Day approaches on October 12, it’s the perfect time to honor the men and women who sustain our communities by providing the food, fiber, and fuel that power our daily lives.

Farmers remain the cornerstone of Wisconsin’s $116.3 billion agriculture industry, which plays a vital role in the state’s economy. Nearly 10 percent of Wisconsin’s workforce is employed in agriculture-related fields, helping feed people not just locally but across the globe.

In 2024, Wisconsin exported $3.97 billion worth of agricultural and food products to 151 countries, including Canada, Mexico, China, Korea, and Japan.

With continued investment in the Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports (WIAE) in the 2025-2027 biennial budget, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) will keep supporting agribusinesses and helping farmers navigate global trade challenges.

While Wisconsin’s agricultural impact reaches far beyond its borders, the wellbeing of local farmers remains a top priority. Governor Evers and the legislature have supported initiatives focused on soil and water conservation, food security, infrastructure, and processing expansion in the meat and dairy sectors.

Mental health has also been a major focus, with DATCP’s Farmer Wellness Program providing a 24/7 helpline, counseling vouchers, and virtual support for farmers and their families.

Farmers deserve recognition not only on National Farmers Day but every day. This fall, show your appreciation by visiting local farms, attending harvest festivals, purchasing Wisconsin-grown products, or simply thanking a farmer. Supporting local agriculture strengthens communities and preserves a vital part of Wisconsin’s culture and economy.
