Federal ban on meat price gouging proposed

Vice President Kamala Harris has put forth a plan to introduce the first-ever federal ban on price gouging within the meat and poultry sectors. This proposal comes as a part of her ongoing campaign to alleviate financial pressures on middle-class families by reducing grocery prices, which remain significantly elevated post-pandemic.

Trade groups, including the Meat Institute and the National Chicken Council, criticize the plan, arguing it unfairly targets their industries without addressing the underlying causes of inflation such as supply shortages and increased production costs. These groups contend that factors like bird flu and cattle shortages have been major drivers of the price increases, not corporate practices.

During a recent campaign event in Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris emphasized the necessity of this ban, pointing out that while most businesses operate fairly, there are outliers exploiting crises to inflate prices unjustly. She highlighted the need for stringent measures against such practices to ensure fair pricing, especially during recovery periods.

The proposal also includes penalties for companies found violating these rules and is part of a broader effort to reduce market consolidation, which Harris believes will help drive down prices. This initiative aligns with President push against anti-competitive practices, supported by new USDA rules to ensure fair market operations in the agriculture sector.
