Wisconsin's farms are culinary powerhouses, but strengthening their supply chains isn't just about feeding the state – it's about creating economic opportunities and building a more resilient food system for everyone. Enter Senator Tammy Baldwin and a brand new $27 million partnership between Wisconsin and the USDA.
Imagine smaller processing costs, bigger shelves for local goods, and easier access to tasty farm-fresh finds at your grocery store. That's the vision behind this grant program, specifically designed to tackle roadblocks faced by Wisconsin's dedicated producers.
"Our farmers and producers are the bedrock of our rural communities," says Senator Baldwin. "This investment empowers them to grow, reach new markets, and ultimately, strengthen our entire food supply chain."
Governor Evers echoes the sentiment, emphasizing the $100 million already secured for Wisconsin agriculture thanks to Baldwin's advocacy. "This new partnership builds on that momentum, ensuring our farmers have the tools they need to thrive and keep our shelves stocked."
So, what can these grants be used for? Expanding processing capacity, building better storage, and even increasing commercial kitchen space are just a few examples. The goal is to create diverse local markets, inject vitality into rural communities, and keep the value chain dollars close to home.
The best part? The state has been listening to farmers' needs, ensuring the priorities reflect the challenges faced by all, especially underserved communities.
This initiative is part of a larger USDA campaign to fortify food systems nationwide. In May, they announced $420 million in grants, and Wisconsin is now one of the lucky recipients. Applications are open through March 6, 2024, and small farms, young farmers, veterans, and underserved communities are especially encouraged to apply.
From farm to table, Wisconsin's food journey is getting a delicious upgrade. This $27 million investment means more opportunities for farmers, more choices for consumers, and a future where fresh, local food is accessible to all. So, raise a fork to Senator Baldwin, the USDA, and the resilient spirit of Wisconsin agriculture!
