Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin is helping combat the increase of childhood obesity by providing funding and support for the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity now affects 1 in 6 children and adolescents in the United States.
Now in its 13th year, the in-school health and wellness program was created the National Dairy Council and the National Football League. They contend that not getting enough physical activity and consuming high-caloric foods and beverages are a few of the leading behaviors influencing excess weight gain in today's youth. The program encourages students to 'fuel up' with nutrient-rich foods and to get active and play for at least 60 minutes daily.
Through their partnership with the NDC and the NFL, the Wisconsin dairy check-off program helps students understand where their food comes from while increasing access to dairy foods. In past years, Fuel Up to Play 60 Program has reached 175,000 Wisconsin students in 500 schools.
