Members of the U.S. Collegiate Soil Judging Contest have returned from the World Congress of Soil Science in Scotland last week as winners of the international competition. They were part of the Soil Science Society of America program, in which students qualified to compete at the event after winning a similar contest in the United States.
Isaac Nollen, a student at University of Wisconsin-Platteville, was among the students on the team. He said he appreciated being able to see not only Scotland, but the peat bogs.
"Peat as a natural compound is uncommon in the lower 48 states but is commonly used in potting soil mixes," Nollen said. "Experience with soils in different locations is a benefit of participating in soil judging experiences."
Other members of the group were from Virginia and Nebraska. John Galbraith from the University of Maryland served as the coach.
