Real Christmas Trees - A Greener Choice for Wisconsin Homes

By Blake Jackson

This holiday season, choosing a real Wisconsin Christmas tree does more than brighten your home it directly supports local growers, strengthens the state’s economy, and benefits the environment. Wisconsin is the fifth-largest Christmas tree producer in the country, supplying around 700,000 trees annually.

This long-standing tradition contributes nearly $50 million to the state’s economy and helps sustain hundreds of family-run farms. Every tree purchased plays a role in maintaining rural communities and keeping local agriculture strong.

“Real trees support real Wisconsin family farms,” said Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producer Association Executive Director Sarah Glitto. “Our state is proud to be a top five Christmas tree producer, and every tree purchased here helps sustain generational growers, rural communities and the working landscapes we all depend on.”

Natural trees also offer environmental advantages. For every tree harvested, producers plant one to three new seedlings. As these trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide, improve soil stability, and create habitats for wildlife. Once the season ends, real trees can be recycled into mulch, compost, or used for erosion control, making them an eco-friendly choice from beginning to end.

In comparison, artificial trees made from plastic and metal and often transported long distances can remain in landfills for centuries.

“A real Christmas tree isn’t just decor it brings tradition, joy and a renewable piece of Wisconsin farmland into your home,” added Glitto.
