Wisconsin cheese plants made more product during June when compared to the same month a year earlier. According to the latest dairy product summary from the USDA, the state produced 293.5 million pounds of cheese in June. That was 1.9 percent more than last year, and 0.6 percent higher than this past May.
Nationally, about 1.12 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in June. That was a slight 0.2 percent increase from 2020, but a 2.9 percent drop compared to the amount manufactured during the previous month.
Wisconsin's production of American cheese increased as the state produced 88.6 million pounds, about 6.2 percent more than last year, but 4.3 percent below last month's production. Cheddar output also rose 7.9 percent compared to 2020 to total 60.9 million pounds, but went down 2.0 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese production was at 144 million pounds, about 0.7 percent below last year, but 2.6 percent higher for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 94.2 million pounds--down 2.0 percent from June 2020, but 1.7 percent more than May 2021.
Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 21.7 million pounds, which was down 3.0 percent from last year, and 7.0 percent lower compared to last month.
