Top Farm Dogs Compete for People's Choice Award

By Jamie Martin

The People’s Choice Pup contest highlights the meaningful role dogs play on farms across the country, the contest is organized by the Amercian Farm Bureau. This year’s nominees—Bubbles, Goose, and Ruby Hope—each bring unique talents, companionship, and emotional strength to the families they support. Voting is open until Nov. 28, giving readers a chance to honor the dog that inspires them most.  Links to learn more about each dog and vote for them, are provided throughout the article.

Bubbles, a hardworking Border Collie from Montana, assists her farmer Elena with livestock and daily chores throughout the year. She herds sheep, moves them during veterinary checks, and guides poultry into shelters at night. Her protective instincts also help safeguard livestock from predators.

During lambing season, she stays alert to ensure newborn lambs are safe. Beyond her work on the farm, Bubbles greets customers at the greenhouse and helps educate visitors at the Montana State Fair

Goose, a Red Heeler from Kentucky, has spent twelve years as a devoted farm companion. After losing his eyesight to glaucoma, he adjusted gracefully and continues to bring joy to his farmer Lindie.

Although he no longer works cattle, Goose remains a steady presence, welcoming visitors and offering emotional support. His resilience and loyalty make him a symbol of strength for the entire farm.

Ruby Hope, a red fox Lab from Indiana, is a certified service dog who supports Travis Burkhart, who was injured in a major accident in 2008. Gifted to him by a generous farmer, Ruby Hope provides motivation, guidance, and comfort.

A new track wheelchair has allowed Travis and Ruby Hope to explore the farm together, reconnecting him with agricultural life. She also participates in his workouts and brings happiness to everyone she meets.
