US broiler meat demand climbs in 2024

US broiler meat demand climbs in 2024

By Jamie Martin

The United States has witnessed a notable rise in broiler meat demand, with a 2.1% increase from 2023, positioning chicken as the most consumed meat in the country.

According to the USDA's latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, the adjusted projections for 2024 indicate a total broiler production of approximately 46.78 billion pounds, reflecting a slight 0.8% increase compared to the previous year.

Despite a modest decline in May's broiler production to 3.99 billion pounds, a decrease of just over 1% from last year, the overall demand for chicken remains strong. This surge in consumer preference is partially attributed to the higher prices of alternative meats like beef, which have steered more consumers towards broiler meat.

USDA reports also highlight a shift in average weights, aligning with broader industry trends towards producing slightly smaller broilers. This strategic adjustment in production volumes and bird sizes is a response to evolving market demands and economic factors influencing the poultry sector.

The continuous growth in broiler meat consumption underscores its significant role in the American diet, with per capita demand reaching 101.6 pounds per person in 2024. These figures not only reflect the affordability and versatility of chicken but also its established position as a staple in U.S. households, outpacing other meats in consumer preference.
