USDA boosts farmland and wetland conservation

USDA boosts farmland and wetland conservation

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is inviting applications for its Agricultural Conservation Easement Program, aimed at preserving agricultural lands and restoring wetlands across the nation.

With a deadline of October 4, 2024, the program offers funding for both Agricultural Land Easements (ALE) and Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE).

ALE funding aids local governments, tribes, and eligible entities in buying permanent easements to prevent agricultural land from being converted to non-agricultural uses.

Meanwhile, WRE funding focuses on restoring lands previously converted from wetlands to agricultural use, supporting efforts to improve water quality, replenish groundwater, and enhance wildlife habitats.

Landowners retain control over lands enrolled in WRE easements, with privileges including recreational use. This initiative is part of a broader effort to support environmental sustainability and is financed through the Inflation Reduction Act, emphasizing the USDA's commitment to enhancing America’s ecological footprint.
