USMEF honors leaders in meat export industry

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) will celebrate the achievements of two key figures in the meat export industry during its Strategic Planning Conference on November 7 in Tucson, Arizona.

Nick Giordano, a pivotal advocate for U.S. pork internationally, will receive the prestigious Michael J. Mansfield Award. This award, named after the influential senator and ambassador, celebrates individuals who have significantly advanced U.S. trade relations globally.

Mark Jagels, a dedicated fourth-generation farmer, will be honored with the USMEF Distinguished Service Award for his exceptional commitment and contributions to the red meat industry.

Jagels' involvement with the USMEF and his leadership roles exemplify the collaborative efforts that drive success in red meat exports.

Giordano, who began his impactful career at the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) in 1995, played a critical role in numerous trade agreements that enhanced market access for U.S. pork. “The best career decision I ever made was to join NPPC," Giordano remarked, highlighting the significant shift in the U.S. pork industry from being a net importer to a net exporter.

His efforts alongside the USMEF helped forge strong international relationships, vital for establishing U.S. meat in global markets. Similarly, Jagels’ work through the Nebraska Corn Board and his tenure on the USMEF Executive Committee have been crucial in promoting U.S. red meat globally.

Both awardees have not only pushed for better trade policies but have also brought together various stakeholders within the agricultural sector to unify and strengthen the U.S.'s stance in the international meat trade arena.

The conference will not only serve as a platform to honor these influential leaders but will also focus on strategic discussions that aim to enhance the U.S.'s position in the global meat export industry. More details and updates on the event are available on the USMEF website.
