Wild rice production in Wisconsin is below average in 2023

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced that wild rice production in northern Wisconsin is generally below average this year. This is due to lower-than-normal water levels in many lakes and flowages, which has made it difficult for harvesters to access and navigate the rice beds.

Despite the lower production, there are still plenty of waters in the north that are producing strong rice beds. Harvesters should do their research to find these beds and wait until the rice is ripe to harvest. Harvesting immature rice can damage the beds and reduce future production.

Boaters should also be aware of the impact their activities can have on wild rice beds. Wakes from boats can uproot and destroy rice plants, especially in shallow water. Boaters should avoid driving through wild rice beds and educate themselves on how to identify these areas.

The DNR is encouraging all Wisconsin residents to help protect wild rice by harvesting responsibly and being aware of the impact their boating activities can have.
