Wisconsin agriculture - a year of growth and resilience

By Blake Jackson

2023 was a year of challenges and triumphs for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). While battling outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, the agency also made significant strides in supporting the state's agriculture industry, protecting consumers, and promoting sustainable practices.

Agriculture:

  • Investing in Processing: DATCP secured increased funding for Meat and Dairy Processor Grants in Governor Evers' budget, fostering long-term viability for Wisconsin facilities.
  • Boosting Cover Crops and Nitrogen Research: State grants for crop insurance premium rebates and Nitrogen Optimization Pilot Programs encourage sustainable practices and land stewardship.
  • Supporting Farmer Wellbeing: The Farm Center's free mental health counseling vouchers reached a record high in 2023, showcasing DATCP's commitment to farmer mental health.

Consumer Protection:

  • Building Local Food Systems: DATCP implemented the Wisconsin Local Food Purchase Assistance program and is working on the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure program, strengthening local food access and infrastructure.
  • Sharing Wisconsin's Bounty: The Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports facilitated trade activities and training for over 180 dairy, meat, and crop companies, promoting Wisconsin products worldwide.
  • Empowering Consumers: DATCP's consumer protection team doubled its outreach efforts in 2023, delivering over 470 presentations to educate consumers about scams and identity theft.

As we move into 2024, DATCP remains dedicated to partnering with Wisconsinites to ensure a thriving agricultural sector, a protected marketplace, and a sustainable future for the state.
