Wisconsin bull sale sees strong average

Wisconsin bull sale sees strong average

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association (WBIA) recently held its Central Bull Test Sale, achieving impressive results. 55 bulls were sold, averaging $4,786 – a significant increase of nearly $700 compared to the previous year. This trend reflects the continuous improvement in bull quality attributed to the dedication of participating consignors.

The sale also served as an opportunity to recognize Darlington Farms for their unwavering commitment to the program. Since its inception in 1957, a representative from Darlington Farms has attended every single sale, highlighting the value they place on the Wisconsin bull development program.

The breakdown of bulls by breed showcased a strong showing across various categories. Here's a glimpse at the average prices:

  • Angus: $5,027 (28 bulls)
  • Red Angus: $3,864 (11 bulls)
  • Simmental: $5,000 (9 bulls)
  • Simmental/Angus Cross: $4,250 (3 bulls)
  • Charolais: $6,625 (2 bulls)

The sale attracted buyers from several states, including Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Montana. Notably, two bulls – a Simmental and a Red Angus – were the top sellers, each fetching $7,000. These bulls were consigned by the Allan Arndt Family (Simmental) and Johnson Family Cattle Co. (Red Angus), respectively.

Several other bulls also commanded high prices, including a Charolais bull ($6,750) and an Angus bull ($6,750). The sale also featured bulls from less common breeds, like a Simmental/South Devon cross ($5,500) and a Hereford bull ($3,500).

The strong sale results underscore the success of the Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association's program in connecting breeders with high-quality bulls and contributing to the continued development of the cattle industry.
