Wisconsin farm prices - hay highs, corn lows

Wisconsin farm prices - hay highs, corn lows

By Blake Jackson

The latest USDA report on agricultural prices in Wisconsin paints a mixed picture for November 2023. While some crops, like hay, saw price increases compared to both October and the previous year, others like corn and oats continued their downward trend.

  • Corn: The average price received by farmers for corn dropped significantly, coming in at $4.40 per bushel in November. This represents a 40-cent decline from October and a $1.68 plunge compared to November 2022.
  • Soybeans: Despite a slight dip from the previous year ($1.20), soybeans offered some positive news for Wisconsin farmers. The November average price of $12.80 per bushel was 40 cents higher than October.
  • Oats: Joining corn in the decline, oats averaged $3.34 per bushel in November, marking a 63-cent drop from October and a $1.27 dip from the same month in 2022.
  • Hay: November brought brighter news for hay producers, with all hay prices averaging $184.00 per ton. This was a $16.00 increase over October and a $11.00 jump compared to November 2022. Both alfalfa hay and other hay varieties saw similar increases, with alfalfa reaching $196.00 per ton and other hay averaging $140.00 per ton.
  • Milk: Dairy farmers saw a small price increase in November, with the average price for milk reaching $19.80 per cwt. This represented a 40-cent gain from October, but still fell $4.20 short of the November 2022 price.

Overall, the November 2023 agricultural price report for Wisconsin offers a mixed bag for farmers. While hay prices brought positive news, corn and oats continued their downward trend, and milk prices, despite a slight increase, remained below the previous year's level.
