Wisconsin farmers face challenges from hot, dry weather


The USDA released the Crop Progress and Condition Report for Wisconsin on August 27, 2023. The report found that hot, dry weather has continued to impact crops across the state.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated 12 percent very short, 36 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 0 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions were rated 20 percent very short, 35 percent short, 45 percent adequate, and 0 percent surplus.

Corn silking was 98 percent complete, and corn in the dough stage was at 77 percent. Corn condition was 59 percent good to excellent, up 4 percent from the previous week.

Soybean blooming or beyond was 97 percent complete, and 88 percent of the crop had set pods. Soybean condition was 59 percent good to excellent, up 3 percent from the previous week.

Oat harvest was 79 percent complete, near last year and the 5-year average. Winter wheat harvest was 98 percent complete, equal to the average. Potato harvest was 22 percent complete, 1 day ahead of last year and equal to the average.

The third cutting of alfalfa was 93 percent complete, and the fourth cutting was 39 percent complete. All hay condition was 47 percent good to excellent statewide, down 3 percent from the previous week.

Pasture condition was rated 34 percent good to excellent statewide, down 3 percent from the previous week.

The hot, dry weather is expected to continue in Wisconsin, which could further impact crop yields. Farmers are encouraged to monitor their crops closely and take steps to conserve soil moisture.
