Wisconsin gets agroforestry demo farms

Wisconsin gets agroforestry demo farms

By Blake Jackson

The Savanna Institute and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have joined forces to establish a statewide agroforestry demonstration farm network in Wisconsin. This initiative aims to educate farmers and landowners on the benefits of integrating trees into their agricultural practices for both conservation and economic gains.

Through a cooperative agreement with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a $1.4 million investment will be made to develop demonstration sites and educational resources across Wisconsin. This project aims to encourage the adoption of agroforestry practices that benefit both productivity and environmental health.

While certain agroforestry techniques, such as windbreaks and riparian buffers, are already prevalent, less common practices like alley cropping and silvopasture offer promising potential for Wisconsin's agricultural landscape. These practices can enhance soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat while boosting agricultural productivity.

Kaitie Adams, Savanna Institute's agroforestry specialist, emphasized the importance of farmer-centered approaches. "Farmers consistently express a need for local demonstration sites to visualize the application of agroforestry in their specific context," she stated. "Additionally, they require region-specific research and producer networks for support. Our partnership with WI NRCS will directly address these crucial needs."

High upfront costs associated with trees pose a significant obstacle to adoption. As part of the project, the Savanna Institute and WI NRCS will collaborate to offer technical assistance to farmers, helping them plan, design, and secure funding for their agroforestry projects. The demand for this assistance remains high throughout the state.

The demonstration farms will host public events, provide educational resources, and train NRCS staff to better assist farmers in integrating trees into their farm systems. This comprehensive approach aims to accelerate the adoption of agroforestry practices and ensure their long-term success in Wisconsin.
