Wisconsin lawmakers, led by Senator Brad Pfaff, introduced a new package of bills on Wednesday that would support Wisconsin agriculture.
The package includes a bill that would require and provide funding for the Department of Health Services to ensure that farmers and farmers markets have the equipment to accept EBT and credit and debit cards.
"We recognize the fact that production agriculture continues to change," Pfaff said. "I think we all realize that the desire to farm, the desire to be able to participate within our food system is there."
Representative Katrina Shankland said that the bill will benefit consumers as well as farmers.
"This bill will continue to tell the story of Wisconsin agriculture," she said.
Other bills in the package would provide funding for meat processor grants, assist farmer mental health programs, and support the Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports.
The package of bills is still in its early stages, and it is unclear when it will be voted on. However, it has received support from both Democrats and Republicans.
