Wisconsin dairy farmers are on alert for potential lice infestations with a twist: the lice may be developing resistance to common treatments. Experts are urging farmers to be vigilant and report any cows displaying persistent itching despite treatment.
Heather Schlesser, a UW Extension dairy expert, explains that while lice on cows are not unusual, recent studies suggest growing resistance to traditional treatments. This raises concerns about potential animal welfare issues and economic losses for farmers.
"We need to understand the scope of the problem," Schlesser emphasizes. "Is this isolated, or are many farmers facing resistant lice?"
To shed light on the situation, Schlesser is calling for farmer participation. If you suspect your cows have lice that continue to itch despite treatment, contact her immediately for sample collection. These samples will help determine the extent of resistance and guide further management strategies.
Early detection and collaboration are crucial in tackling this potential challenge. By keeping a watchful eye and reporting suspicious cases, Wisconsin farmers can contribute to safeguarding animal health and the sustainability of their dairy operations.
