The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced $6 million in grants to support lake and river restoration and protection across the state. This diverse funding package targets education, planning, habitat restoration, water quality improvement, and invasive species control.
"The local efforts to protect our water resources are inspiring," said DNR Surface Water Grant Program Manager Jen Jefferson. "We received over 428 applications, showcasing the strong partnerships and dedication to improving water quality."
Among the funded projects:
- Foxhead Regenerative Agriculture Project: promoting soil and water health in Green Lake and Fond du Lac counties through education and outreach.
- Coon Creek Community Watershed Council: developing a watershed plan to improve water quality in Vernon, La Crosse, and Monroe counties.
- Vilas County: collaborating with local groups to collect data, raise awareness, and implement shoreline best practices in various watersheds.
- 24 organizations: implementing "Healthy Lakes and Rivers" projects, offering cost-effective solutions like native plantings and rain gardens to improve habitat and water quality.
- 145 organizations: participating in the "Clean Boats, Clean Waters" program, educating boaters to prevent aquatic invasive species spread.
- 38 organizations: joining the "Lake Monitoring and Protection Network," supporting lake monitoring and invasive species prevention in 69 of Wisconsin's 72 counties.
These grants leverage local funding and are expected to make significant contributions to the state's water resources. Applications for next year's grants open in September, encouraging early planning for local groups seeking support for their water quality initiatives.
