Easing US meat export paths to Canada

Easing US meat export paths to Canada

By Jamie Martin

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) is actively seeking ways to streamline the process of exporting meat to Canada, a key market for US beef and pork.

Despite Canada ranking as a top destination for these exports, regulatory challenges continue to impede the speed of shipments.

Courtney Heller, Director of Export Services at USMEF, highlighted the recent transition to the Public Health Information System (PHIS) export module, which was designed to reduce paperwork and minimize human error.

However, contrary to its purpose of simplifying the export process through digitization, exporters are still required to submit physical documents, a step that was supposed to be eliminated.

The similarities between the food and inspection systems of the US and Canada offer a unique opportunity to further streamline these processes.

The USMEF, in collaboration with industry partners, is developing recommendations to ease regulatory burdens and enhance the efficiency of meat trade between the two nations.

Last year, Canada was the fourth-largest market for US pork and fifth for beef, indicating significant trade potential that could be optimized through improved regulatory processes.

By addressing these electronic system issues and collaborating with Canadian counterparts, the USMEF aims to facilitate smoother and quicker meat exports, boosting trade relations and economic benefits for both countries.
