The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is proud to announce its annual Arbor Day tree planting program, offering free tree seedlings to all fourth graders in the state. This initiative aims to educate students about the importance of trees and encourage them to become active stewards of the environment.
Fourth-grade teachers, principals, and homeschool parents can now place seedling orders and coordinate delivery by completing the 2024 Arbor Day application by March 15th. Arbor Day itself falls on April 26th, 2024, and is a national celebration dedicated to enhancing tree cover across the country for a healthier planet.
The DNR's Arbor Day program goes beyond simply providing free seedlings. It also includes interactive educational resources that teach students about the vital role trees play in our world. Each year, the DNR distributes approximately 50,000 seedlings, fostering a love for nature and environmental awareness in young minds.
Seedlings arrive protected to prevent messes in backpacks and are accompanied by detailed information on planting and caring for them. These resources empower students to become responsible tree stewards, nurturing their seedlings and witnessing their growth firsthand.
"Trees offer a multitude of benefits," explains DNR Chief State Forester Heather Berklund. "They not only provide us with oxygen and filter carbon dioxide, but also serve as vital habitats for wildlife and contribute essential materials for everyday life. This program allows us to connect with students directly, educating them about tree conservation and the importance of preserving our forests."
The DNR's Arbor Day program is an excellent way to engage young people in environmental stewardship and inspire them to become responsible citizens. By supporting these initiatives, we can plant the seeds for a greener and healthier future for generations to come.
