Construction is well underway for a major agricultural export terminal being built at the Port of Milwaukee. The DeLong Company held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday for the $35 million project, which will be located on the west side of Jones Island. The Clinton-based commodities firm is building the maritime operation with help from state and federal business development funds.
The facility will be one of the first on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway system to handle various commodities via truck, rail and international vessel including Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles, or DDGs.
Company President Bo DeLong told Brownfield Ag News that the facility will open up business opportunities in Europe for DDGs.
"All of our business thus far has been delivered via container, but this will be our first opportunity to delivery with bulk vessels," DeLong told the radio network. "We've been studying the market for the past three years and we believe this will be a more economical way to deliver DDGs."
The new facility is expected to be fully operational by April 2022, coinciding with the start of next year's shipping season. It will have a storage capacity of about 45,000 metric tons.
DeLong says his company plans to eventually expand its vessel transport venture to include corn and soybean shipments in the future.
