Neil and Melissa Durrant thrive with YF and R program

By Jamie Martin

Neil and Melissa Durrant, from Idaho, have found immense value in their participation with the American Farm Bureau Federation’s (AFBF) Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Committee. Serving on the committee from 2019 to 2021, they have used their experiences to advance their careers and advocate for the agricultural industry.

Neil, a fourth-generation farmer, oversees 1,400 acres of irrigated crops including corn, sugar beets, wheat, alfalfa, and dry beans. He also operates a grain elevator and a feed mill. Melissa, currently an Idaho House of Representatives member, is set to complete her master’s degree in speech language pathology by May 2025. The couple, married for 18 years, has four children.

Melissa attributes her career growth to her time on the YF&R Committee. “The skills I learned helped me complete an online master’s program and led me to run for office,” she shared. Melissa's involvement in the committee provided her with invaluable skills and opportunities for advocacy.

Neil also benefitted from the committee, stating, “I was elected county Farm Bureau president and serve on several state committees. Additionally, I am the treasurer for the US Dry Bean Council. The committee experience enhanced my leadership abilities and confidence.”

Despite their busy schedules, the Durrants advocate for active participation in the Farm Bureau. Neil emphasized, “Being involved allows us to connect with others who share similar challenges and interests. It also helps build relationships that support us during tough and good times.”

The Durrants' story exemplifies the dedication and passion of young farmers and ranchers. Their journey with the YF&R Committee underscores the importance of engagement in Farm Bureau activities. Encouraging others, Neil said, “To succeed, involvement is crucial. You never know where it might lead.”
