Renew Livestock Registration to Avoid Fines in Wisconsin

Renew Livestock Registration to Avoid Fines in Wisconsin

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), in collaboration with the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC), is urging all livestock owners to renew and update their livestock premises registration.

This is required by state law, and the renewal deadline is July 31, 2025. Every livestock owner must register the location where their animals are kept, regardless of the number of animals.

Those who need to renew their registration can do so by contacting WLIC. DATCP has sent email notifications to current registrants, but those without an email address will receive a letter this spring.

The information collected is used to help respond to animal disease outbreaks, ensuring animal health, food safety, and the protection of Wisconsin's agricultural economy. All registration information is kept confidential and never sold.

Locations that need to be registered include farms, hobby farms, backyard poultry flocks, veterinary clinics with large animal hospitals, stables, livestock exhibitions, markets, feedlots, and dealers or haulers who house livestock.

Registration is free and must be updated every three years. If you no longer house livestock, you must update your registration accordingly.

To renew or register a premises, livestock owners can follow the instructions in their email, visit the DATCP website at wiid.org/premises-registration-renewal/, or contact WLIC at (888) 808-1910. Failure to register may result in fines and ineligibility for state indemnity payments if animals are affected by disease.
