State Cheese Production Falls Slightly in October



Wisconsin cheese factories made less product during the month of October when compared to the previous year. According to the latest dairy product summary from the USDA, the state produced 286.2 million pounds of cheese during the month. That was a slight 0.8 percent decrease from last year, but 1.5 percent higher than this past September (which had less days on the calendar).

Nationally, about 1.17 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in October. That was a 1.4 percent increase from 2021, and 2.4 percent more compared to the amount manufactured during the previous month.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese increased as the state produced 87.9 million pounds, about 1.6 percent more than last year, and 9.8 percent above last month's production. Cheddar output also rose by 0.5 percent compared to 2021 to total 60.1 million pounds, and rose 13.8 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese production was at 138.1 million pounds, about 2.0 percent above last year, but 5.1 percent lower for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 86.6 million pounds--up 3.5 percent from October 2021, but 7.3 percent less than September 2022.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 24.2 million pounds, which was down 3.1 percent from last year, and 5.8 percent lower compared to last month.
