Texas Timber Industry Holds Strong with New Growth Support

Texas Timber Industry Holds Strong with New Growth Support

By Jamie Martin

Texas' timber industry continues to make a strong economic impact. Eric Taylor, a forestry expert with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Forest Service, says the market is steady with strong demand for sawtimber from East Texas pine forests.

The region includes 43 counties with about 12 million acres of productive timberland. Most of this land is privately held, with many small family landowners managing tracts under 100 acres. Larger plots are owned by investment companies or public agencies.

Pine sawtimber, used in construction, remains the top product. Pulpwood markets, on the other hand, remain weak due to an oversupply of small trees.

New mill investments show ongoing confidence in the industry, despite slower hardwood and pulp sectors. Much of Texas’ timber trade happens with Canada and Mexico, with these two countries making up a major share of exports and imports.

Homebuilding still affects sawtimber prices, and mixed housing trends influence the lumber market.

There’s rising interest in mass timber—engineered wood used in big buildings as an eco-friendly alternative to steel or concrete. These products meet safety and strength needs for large constructions.

To support forest sustainability, especially for small landowners, the Texas A&M Forest Service plans to launch a cost-share program by fall. It will cover up to 80% of approved forest management costs, such as thinning or tree planting.
