Farmers in three southern Wisconsin counties may be eligible for emergency credit after U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack issued a disaster declaration in the region because of drought conditions.
Producers in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth Counties can apply for emergency loans to be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts. Those who farm in contiguous counties may also be eligible for assistance. Those counties include Jefferson, Milwaukee, Rock and Waukesha.
The USDA's Farm Service Agency will review the loan applications based on the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability. The application deadline for the loan program is February 22, 2022.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, these counties suffered from a degree of drought intensity value during the growing season.
