Topics of UW Ag Research Station 2022 Field Days Announced



Nearly a dozen field days will be held again this year at the various University of Wisconsin-Madison Agricultural Research Station locations.

The events are designed to share research updates and educational information with agricultural professionals, home gardeners and other interested individuals.

Dates, locations and topics include:

** July 6 - Arlington Agricultural Research Station, N695 Hopkins Road, Arlington, WI. This field day features presentations on small grain resiliency, disease management, and winter wheat variety trials.

** July 7 - Hancock Agricultural Research Station, N3909 County Road V, Hancock, WI. This field day features updates of interest to the state’s potato industry on variety trials; disease, insect and weed management field experiments; and crop storage research.

** July 14 - Peninsular Agricultural Research Station, 4312 WI-42 Sturgeon Bay, WI. This summer, Peninsular Station is offering a series of three classes to help people get started growing apples in their backyards. The July 14 class focuses on establishing and training the tree, including tree selection, planting location, pruning and soil nutrition. The second class, on Aug. 25, focuses on pests of apple trees. The final class, on Sept. 22, will focus on the fruit.

** July 28 - Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station, 4181 Camp Bryn Afon Rd, Rhinelander, WI. This field day features presentations and tours at Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station, one of the nation’s top potato research facilities and home of UW–Madison’s potato breeding program. In addition to multiple potato breeding research updates, there will be presentations on pollinator, bioenergy, timber management and phytoremediation projects taking place at the station, and more.

** July 29-31 - Kemp Natural Resources Station, 9161 Kemp Road, Woodruff, WI. This festival is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the diversity of Wisconsin’s insects and other arthropods. Activities begin Friday evening and continue through Saturday.

** August 2 - O.J. Noer Turfgrass Research and Education Facility, 2502 Highway M, Verona, WI. This field day, organized by the Wisconsin Turfgrass Association and the station, features morning sessions on general turfgrass management and lawn care. After a lunch break, the focus shifts to golf turf management. This year’s event will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the dedication of the facility.

** August 23 - Spooner Agricultural Research Station, 780 Orchard Lane, Spooner, WI. This popular event sponsored by the station, the UW–Madison Division of Extension and the North Country Master Gardener Volunteer Association features guest speakers, demonstrations, displays and vegetable tastings. UW specialists and local experts will be on hand to answer gardening questions.

** August 26-27 - Kemp Natural Resources Station, 9161 Kemp Road, Woodruff, WI. This festival features a variety of fungi-focused activities and sessions, including beginner-level mushroom identification, fungi collection outings, and much more. Activities begin Friday evening and continue through Saturday.

** August 30 - Arlington Agricultural Research Station, N695 Hopkins Road, Arlington, WI. This field day will highlight organic research conducted at UW–Madison, including optimizing equipment and production practices for organic no-till production; interseeding cover crops into corn and soybeans; the impact of organic management on soil health; and weed management for organic hemp production.

** August 31 - Arlington Agricultural Research Station, N695 Hopkins Road, Arlington, WI. This field day highlights crops and soils research conducted by UW–Madison scientists, including field plots tours of current research projects.
