The state and national Farm Bureau organizations have put together some figures on what it costs the average person to cookout this year on Independence Day. According to the summary, a Fourth of July picnic including hot dogs, cheeseburgers, condiment, pork spare ribs, deli potato salad, baked beans, corn chips, lemonade, chocolate milk and watermelon runs just under $7 per person.
The Wisconsin Farm Bureau estimates that it would cost about $69.74 to feed 10 people during the holiday. That's $9.39 more than the price of the same goods last summer. Nationally, that price is closer to $69.68 or $6.97 per person, which was more than a dollar higher than in 2021.
"The combined disruptions we are seeing within the supply chain, inflation and the war in Ukraine have a cascading effect when it comes to the price of food," said WFBF Media Relations Director Cassie Sonnentag. "While we are seeing the price of food increase both nationally and here at home, at just under $7 per person, this year's summer cookout is cheaper than the average fast-food meal."
Over 160 volunteer shoppers in more than three dozens states checked retail prices for summer picnic foods to put the informal survey together. In Wisconsin, volunteers in 27 communities conducted the survey in local grocery stores.
