USDA launches network to support distressed farmers

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the launch of the Distressed Borrowers Assistance Network, a new initiative aimed at supporting farmers and ranchers struggling with financial difficulties.

This network will provide personalized assistance to help distressed borrowers stabilize their finances and regain their footing in agriculture. The announcement was made at the Farm Aid Festival in Saratoga Springs, New York.

FSA Administrator Zach Ducheneaux emphasized the importance of experienced advocates in helping producers navigate financial challenges. The network partners with organizations such as Farm Aid, the Rural Advancement Foundation International, and various universities to offer comprehensive support tailored to individual needs.

Through this initiative, community-based organizations will receive training on farm loan policies, enabling them to assist producers in understanding the financial resources available through the Farm Service Agency (FSA).

This collaborative approach ensures that when farmers visit FSA offices, they receive informed support from both FSA staff and partner representatives.

The network aims to address immediate financial needs while providing wraparound services tailored to the unique challenges faced by distressed producers.

Once stabilized, these farmers will be better positioned to seize new opportunities and continue contributing to the agricultural economy.

In addition to this network, the USDA has announced improvements to its Farm Loan Programs. Starting September 25, 2024, the FSA will implement changes to enhance access and delivery, making it easier for borrowers to invest in and expand their operations.

Recent upgrades include an interactive Loan Assistance Tool, an online loan application, and a streamlined direct loan repayment process. These improvements aim to simplify the experience for over 26,000 annual producers applying for direct loans.

The USDA’s initiatives are designed to foster a more resilient agricultural sector, ensuring that farmers and ranchers receive the support they need to thrive.
