Briza Castro, a PhD candidate at UW-Madison, has been named the 2024 Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) Scholar for her outstanding contributions to dairy cattle reproduction research. Castro's work holds significant promise for advancing the efficiency and sustainability of dairy farming practices.

With a background in animal and dairy sciences from New Mexico State University, Castro's research journey has been dedicated to unraveling the complexities of reproductive physiology in dairy cattle. Under the mentorship of M. Sofia Ortega, Castro focuses on identifying markers of bovine oocyte competence following FSH stimulation in Holstein heifers.

Castro's current research endeavors aim to bridge the gap between in vitro and in vivo oocyte maturation processes, seeking to enhance the success of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in dairy farming. Her dedication to excellence extends beyond the laboratory, as she actively engages in mentoring and teaching roles, fostering the next generation of dairy science professionals.

The DCRC Scholars program recognizes exceptional graduate students committed to advancing dairy cattle reproduction. Castro's selection underscores the significance of her research in driving innovation and improvement within the dairy industry.
