The Wisconsin Custom Operators (WCO) Scholarship program recognizes students pursuing careers in agriculture. They recently awarded scholarships to two deserving students, Kaleb Ellis and Emily Volmer.
Applicants are evaluated on leadership, civic engagement, academic achievement, and agricultural experience. This year, the program was expanded to encompass a wider range of educational paths, including traditional college degrees, trade schools, and industry-specific training programs. The goal is to support the development of a well-trained workforce for Wisconsin's agricultural sector.
Kaleb Ellis, recipient of the $1,500 Robert Hoerth Memorial Scholarship, exemplifies the program's focus on future agricultural business owners. He has already obtained his CDL and is gaining experience working on a custom harvest crew. Back in Wisconsin, he works for his uncle's custom farming business and even raises his own hogs.
Emily Volmer, a $1,000 scholarship recipient, demonstrates the program's flexibility. She is pursuing a degree in political science with plans to attend law school. While her path may not be directly linked to production agriculture, her experience working in her family's custom service business demonstrates a strong understanding of the industry.
The WCO scholarship program is open to students with ties to the organization, such as family members or employees of members. However, the program also allows WCO members to nominate exceptional individuals who may not have a direct connection. This ensures the program can recognize a broad range of talent within the agricultural community.
Applications for the 2024 WCO scholarships are open until May 1st. Students interested in a career in agriculture, regardless of their specific educational path, are encouraged to apply. Interested students should visit https://wiscustomoperators.org/about/scholarships.php
