The majority of Wisconsin is in moderate to exceptional drought, according to the US Drought Monitor. Extreme to exceptional drought (D3-D4) covers 13% of the state, while moderate to severe drought (D1-D2) covers 78%.
Precipitation deficits since June 1 are 4-6 inches in the severe drought area and 6-8 inches in the extreme drought area. This is about 50% of normal.
While cooler weather is expected for the weekend, little or no precipitation is predicted over the next week. Another hot spell is in the forecast for early September.
The drought is having a negative impact on agriculture, forestry, and recreation. Farmers are experiencing crop damage and water shortages, while forest fires are a growing concern.
Residents are urged to conserve water and to be aware of the fire danger.
