In 2023, Wisconsin's cranberry industry continued to thrive, maintaining its top position in national production. According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service report, Wisconsin's cranberry production reached a record 5.01 million barrels, a significant increase from the previous year's 4.80 million barrels.
This growth in production occurred despite a slight decrease in harvested acres, with cranberry growers utilizing 19,100 acres, down 400 acres from the previous season.
The increase in average yield per acre contributed significantly to this rise in production, with an impressive 7 percent increase from 246.2 barrels per acre in 2022 to 262.3 barrels per acre in 2023. The price of cranberries, however, experienced a modest decline of 3 percent to $37.40 per barrel, impacting the overall value of utilized production.
The total value of Wisconsin's cranberry production was reported at $187 million in 2023, with processed cranberries accounting for the majority, representing 94 percent of utilized production.
This industry dominance solidifies Wisconsin's position as the nation's leading cranberry producer, with its production more than doubling that of Massachusetts, the second highest producing state. Despite market fluctuations, Wisconsin's cranberry industry continues to be a vital contributor to both the state's agricultural economy and the national cranberry market.
