In September 2024, milk production in Wisconsin reached 2.62 billion pounds, reflecting a 1 percent decline compared to the same month last year, as reported by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service in their latest Milk Production report.
The state's dairy herd remained steady at 1.27 million cows, unchanged from August, but there were 4,000 fewer cows than in September 2023.
The average milk production per cow stood at 2,070 pounds, which is 5 pounds lower than the previous year’s figure.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s egg production for September 2024 totaled 204 million eggs, marking a slight increase compared to September 2023, according to the USDA’s Chickens and Eggs report.
Although the average number of laying hens in the state during the month was 7.77 million, this number showed a slight decrease from the same period last year.
Despite this decline in the number of layers, productivity improved, with eggs per 100 layers reaching 2,625, representing a 1 percent increase from September 2023.
